Incidents of Travel In autumn 99 I took a long trip to Asia.
I bought a digital camera just before leaving, a Sony Mavica-91, and
had a lot of fun with it along the way.

Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

I spent about a month in Nepal, mostly in the Kathmandu valley.

My friend Raj Khadka had just moved back to Kathmandu after many years in the U.S. I stayed with him and his mother. My visit coincided with Dasain, the most important annual family-oriented Hindu festival.

Trekking the valley of the Kali Gandaki, Nepal

Late in October I took a ten-day trek down the spectacular western side of the Annapurna Circuit, in the company of a Nepali guide/porter.

A few months later the 14-year-old 17th Karmapa, an eminent lama, traveled the same route after escaping from Tibet through the Mustang district to the north.

Northern Vietnam
I spent most of November and December in Vietnam, staying with my college friend Lynel Long and her family in Hanoi. Side trips included kayaking in Ha Long Bay and a visit to Sa Pa, a town in the far north largely populated by ethnic minorities.

Southern Vietnam
I spent about a week in the Mekong delta, accompanying Population Council researchers on a field trip to a remote rural commune. I also visited the famous wartime tunnel complex at Cu Chi, and the nearby Holy See of an unusual religion indigenous to Vietnam, Caodaism.
